I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
Psalm 32:8 (NIV)
Several years I was searching for a teaching position in another county. I had received a call from a school district to interview for a job teaching science. I had heard of the district but I had no idea how to get there, so I googled the directions. The interview was scheduled for a Monday morning. My daughter and I had decided to drive down that Sunday afternoon and get a hotel for the night.
We had our directions and we were doing great until I made a right turn onto the wrong street. After driving for a few minutes, I noticed that the signs were not matching the information on our driving directions. I turned around. My daughter called a friend who was familiar with the low country. She kept him on the phone and he directed us the way we needed to go.
After driving for about two hours, we were able to find the school and a place to stay for the night. I ask for directions when I get lost.
Sometimes, I may miss a turn when I am headed to pick my grandson up from school. It's not that I don't know where the school is, but I become distracted and I am usually a half mile from my destination when I realize that I missed my turn.
Perhaps some of you have occassionally become lost when you were travelling. Did you take the wrong exit? How long did it take for you to realize that you were going the wrong way? It may take some of us a little longer to get back on the right road. Is it because we are not even aware that we've lost or are we just too obstinate or macho to ask for help?
The reality is that just as we can get lost when we are travelling, sometimes we get lost on this journey called life; yet we do not have to stay lost. All we need to do is turn around and go the right way. When we travel, we have aids to assist us - maps, Yahoo driving directions, or a navigation system in our vehicle. As we travel on this spiritual journey, we have help too... God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Bible, and our spiritual leaders. We just need to ask for directions.
Heavenly Father, Give us the courage to seek help when we recognize that we are on the wrong path. Amen
